Making Plenty of Gunkan Sushi – Guests from Miami

Hello from Sushi Academy Ginza — your sushi experience destination in the heart of Tokyo!

The other day, we had the pleasure of welcoming a lovely family from Miami to our sushi-making class. One thing that stood out during the session was how much their 12-year-old daughter absolutely loved nori (seaweed)!

With sparkling eyes, she told us, “Nori is my favorite!”So during the lesson, we made extra gunkan rolls together and had a great time.In addition to popular toppings like ikura (salmon roe) and negitoro (minced tuna with green onion), we also made tuna mayo gunkan — a “home-style” sushi that’s easy to recreate back in the U.S.It’s a familiar and comforting flavor, and we hope they’ll enjoy making it again at home!

We focus on making the experience easy to recreate at home, so our guests can continue enjoying sushi even after returning to their home country.

At Sushi Academy Ginza, our experience lessons include not only classic nigiri sushi, but also gunkan (battleship rolls) and temaki (hand rolls). The hands-on activity of choosing your favorite toppings and wrapping your own sushi is visually fun and especially popular with children.

In the past, many people overseas were not familiar with the flavor or texture of nori (seaweed), so inside-out rolls like the California roll became the norm. However, in recent years, the global “hand roll” boom has shown us that the appeal of nori is starting to spread around the world.

We’re truly happy to see more and more international guests falling in love with the crisp texture of nori and the subtle flavor variations that come from different ingredient combinations. It’s those delicate details that make sushi so special.

There’s no single “right way” when it comes to sushi. One of its greatest charms is that anyone, regardless of country or culture, can discover their own version of “delicious.”We hope today brings another memorable encounter through sushi.
